EDGE TECH Boost Pro 120GB Sandforce SF-2281 SSD Drive Review
* Note: Do you own one of these drives, and you're experiencing BSODs? This is a Sandforce Issues and Boost Pro Firmware 3.3.2 will fix it.
After a month of using the Edge Boost Pro SSD with firmware 3.3.2 I can report I haven't had a single issue, and this SSD drive is now my operating system drive. This drive is everything I look for as my primary operating system hard drive:
- Extremely Fast (535MB/s read, 483MB/s write)
- Reliable
- Affordable
I've updated the benchmarks below with the newer Sandforce SF-2281 V3.3.2 firmware, which had a small performance penalty (under 1%). When formatting this drive in Windows 7 x64 it took around 5 minutes to format (approximately 1% every 3 seconds).
EDGE TECH Boost Pro 120GB Benchmarks
Test System: Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3, Phenom X6 1090T, 8GB G.Skill 1333Ghz 7-7-7-21 DDR3.
Note: Because this is an AMD based system some of these benchmarks will be lower than on an Intel Sandy Bridge system (ATTO is higher on a Sandy Bridge, but AS SSD is higher on an AMD 890GX).
EDGE TECH Boost Pro 120GB Atto Benchmark
Amazing a read speed of 524MB/s, and write speed of 482MB/s.
EDGE TECH Boost Pro 120GB AS SSD Benchmark
These are very impressive benchmarks compared to my previous OCZ Vertex 2 EX 80GB.
Note quite the 50,000 claimed on the packaging but it destroys my OCZ drive (it scored 216 vs 449 points).
EDGE TECH Boost Pro 120GB CrystalDiskMark Benchmark
This drive has a very fast write speed, my previous OCZ Vertex 2 had a fastest write speed of 42.26MB/s compared to 145.5MB/s.
EDGE TECH Boost Pro 120GB HD Tach Benchmark
Keep in mind HD Tach is horribly out of date, and no longer a reliable benchmark (requires XP SP3 compatibility mode). That being said I like to include it as the results can be telling about the quality of the NAND used.
This is by far the fastest performance I have seen in HD Tach.
EDGE TECH Boost Pro 120GB Conclusion
With online prices starting at $184.95, this drive is a superb deal. After some minor issues with bad Sandforce firmware, since SF-2281 firmware version 3.3.2 I couldn't be happier with this drive. In over a month of running it as my operating system drive I haven't had a single BSOD, and had a more responsive Windows 7 Pro x64 system then I have ever had before. If you are still using a rotation hard drive, or older SSD this is a very worthwhile upgrade.
